One of the most enduring stars of American cinema and an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Robert Redford, passed away on Tuesday at his home in Utah at the age of 89. His longtime publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed that Redford died peacefully in his sleep.

Robert Redford was born in Santa Monica in 1936. Redford grew up in modest circumstances but rose to become Hollywood’s golden boy of the 1960s and 70s. Redford’s career was not limited to films only. He made his directorial debut with Ordinary People (1980), a family drama that won him the Academy Award for Best Director. His dedication to independent cinema led him to create the Sundance Institute in 1981 and the Sundance Film Festival, now one of the most influential platforms for filmmakers worldwide.

Apart from the films, Redford was a passionate activist. He championed environmental causes, Native American rights, and LGBTQ+ equality. He was honored by America’s President Barack Obama with the Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Although Redford announced his retirement in 2018, he continued to surprise audiences with an appearance in The Old Man & the Gun. His final cameo came in his own-produced film, AMC’s Dark Winds, in 2023.

His loss not only shook Hollywood but also the Indian Film Industry. Paying tribute to Robert’s legacy, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor shared a quote from Redford on her Instagram story. She wrote, “Storytelling is important. Part of human continuity” – Robert Redford.
