Double Dhamaka: GST 2.0 Brings Reforms For Middle Class

On August 4, 2025, the Government of India launched a sweeping package of NextGenGST reforms across sectors, including equitable growth, the ease of living, and protection of citizen welfare. These reforms have been officially announced through several Press Information Bureau releases dated 4 September 2025. It covers areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, rural development, MSME support, middle-class relief, insurance access, nutrition, and the growth of the economy.

A Healthier India: GST Reduced on Life-Saving Medicines and Health Essentials

On the subject of making healthcare affordable, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reconfirmed government efforts toward accessible medical care. He emphasised that, under NextGenGST, 33 essential life-saving medicines will be zero-rated, in addition to the coverage from Jan Aushadhi Kendras and Ayushman Bharat.

Life and health insurance products are also getting GST relief so that “Insurance for All by 2047” could be made possible. The Prime Minister called it a landmark step towards a financially sound, “Swasth and Samarth Bharat.”

Nourishing the Nation: Affordability in Food and Nutrition

In keeping with public health and nutrition, the Government has reduced GST on key food commodities, health essentials, and protein-enriched foodstuffs. These initiatives complement the well-known schemes of Ayushman Bharat and POSHAN Abhiyaan under the wider context of healthy life and nutritional accessibility across the nation.

Empowering Rural Producers: Dairy Farmers Gain from Reforms

Prime Minister Modi affirmed the importance of dairy farmers and cooperatives for nutritional security and inclusive rural growth. Through NextGenGST and schemes such as the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, the reforms intend to empower lakhs of farmers in value addition and render dairy products affordable to Indian households.

Industrial Uplift: Boost to Manufacturing and ‘Made in India’

The NextGenGST reforms have introduced simplified tax slabs of 5% and 18%, alongside streamlined digital compliance. This is expected to lower input costs considerably and thus the drive for manufacturing and the “Made in India” agenda.

MSME Momentum: Simplified Compliance and Growth Pathways

The Prime Minister observed that MSMEs are the backbone of the economy and that the reforms rationalise tax rates, simplify procedures, and ease operational burdens. This strengthens entrepreneurship, broadens access to markets, and contributes to job creation across the country.

Middle-Class Relief: Everyday Goods Become More Affordable

One of the important focuses of the reforms consists of enhancing affordability for the Indian middle class. Targeted relief on household goods, NextGenGST aims at making life easier and comfortable for millions of families. Such items include televisions, air conditioners, and other essentials.

Setting Right Economic Landscape: Smarter Taxation Made Simple

The second of his ten proclamations was to synthesise a decade of citizen-centred fiscal reforms; NextGenGST is a continuation of initiatives that include corporate tax cuts, unified GST implementation, and personal income tax relief. These will make the regime simpler, fairer, and more pro-growth with the backing of India’s strong fiscal discipline and increasing global confidence.

Industry Perspective: Nutra Sector Welcomes Transformational Change

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, speaking at the Bharat Nutraverse Expo 2025, described the GST reductions as a “festival gift” for the nutraceutical sector. He urged all industry stakeholders to ensure that the full GST savings are passed over to the consumers and promote “Made in India” products.

Goyal emphasised that the reduced GST, which is as low as 5% in some sectors, would stimulate consumption, demand, and growth. He also reiterated the ambitious vision of the nation to scale GDP from USD 4 trillion to USD 30 trillion by 2047, making India a Viksit Bharat, with opportunity and self-reliance at its core.

NextGenGST reforms of the Government represent a paradigm shift in policy. With tax changes aimed at stimulating targeted sectors, these measures enhance access, ease, and economic rationality.

The reforms encompass everything from health and nutrition to manufacturing, rural development, and social security, as well as macroeconomic direction, to ensure that through a cheaper, more equitable, and affluent nation, every Indian, irrespective of age, income level, and region, benefits. In the words of Prime Minister Modi, these reforms bring India closer to a Viksit Bharat, a term signifying ease of living, inclusive growth, and national strength.
