Indian Oil Corp. Limited (IOCL) and Air India have signed an MoU for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). It marks a turning point in the aviation industry. This initiative is a part of India’s effort to reduce carbon emissions and align with global climate commitments. Through this partnership, Air India’s flagship carrier will utilise SAF, which is produced in Panipat, Haryana.
WHAT IS SAF?
SAF stands for Sustainable Aviation Fuel. It is a cleaner and greener alternative to conventional jet fuel. It is produced from non-fossil sources such as agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and used cooking oil. SAF has the potential to cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, in contrast to traditional aviation fuel.
The flight, operating from Delhi to Dubai, has been a successful testament to India’s capabilities in adopting advanced green fuels. Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, stated that the MoU aligns with the airline’s strategy to meet its IATA Net Zero by 2050 target.
Indigenous Green Fuel Production
This plant is India’s first commercial-scale SAF production facility, which uses domestic feedstock and Made in India technology. At the refinery, Indian Oil plans to start producing sustainable aviation fuel in December of this year, which is expected to generate 35,000 tonnes of green fuel annually. Waste cooking oil from restaurants, hotels, and food service providers nationwide will be used to make the SAF, which was otherwise disposed of as waste.
Meeting Global Standards
This facility is ISCC-CORSIA-certified, meeting international sustainability standards and providing a fuel solution will help decarbonise air travel while aligning national growth with global climate goals. This certification ensures the fuel meets the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) requirements, making it suitable for international flights.
Air India’s Fleet Modernisation Drive
Air India has placed orders for 570 new aircraft, and it aims to operate one of the world’s lowest carbon-emitting fleets. This massive fleet expansion, combined with the adoption of SAF, positions the airline at the forefront of environmentally responsible aviation.
The initiative not just represents a business partnership but a commitment to the environment that could influence aviation sustainability practices across South Asia and beyond.
