After allegedly consuming poisonous liquor in villages under the Majitha block late Monday night, at least 14 people have died, and six more are receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital in Amritsar.
“Around 9:30 p.m. last night, we learned that people had begun to die as a result of drinking fabricated alcohol. We took immediate action and took four people into custody. The alcohol supplier, Parabjeet Singh, was arrested. We identified Sahab Singh as the kingpin during questioning, and we have also taken him into custody,” SSP Maninder Singh stated.
Police claim that Sahib Singh purchased 50 liters of methanol and mixed it to make 120 liters of illicit liquor, which he then gave to the nearby sellers. All six of the accused have been the subject of a formal complaint filed by the police under strict provisions, such as Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, responded to the tragedy by posting on X in which he expressed his sorrow and rage over the deaths.
Tragically, there have been reports of multiple deaths in some villages near Majitha as a result of consuming poisonous alcohol. There will be no tolerance for these killers of innocent people. These are murders, not fatalities. The law’s harshest penalties will be meted out to those who have caused mourning in people’s homes by using poisonous alcohol, he said.
“I pray to the Almighty for the spiritual peace of the departed souls,” Mann added, expressing his condolences to the impacted families. The government will make every effort to assist the families.
Sakshi Sawhney, the deputy commissioner of Amritsar, described it as a regrettable tragedy. “We learnt about it last evening. According to reports from five villages, the condition of those who drank alcohol is critical. The government is offering the impacted individuals all the assistance it can. We’re making sure that the number of fatalities doesn’t increase. The suppliers have been taken into custody, and an investigation is being conducted,” she stated.
Arvind Kejriwal said in a post on X that no one will be spared, regardless of how powerful they are.
