Wang Yi Visits India, Marking Bilateral Ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on August 18, 2025, for a two-day official visit, marking his first trip to India in three years. This visit is being seen as an important attempt to repair ties between the two Asian giants after years of damaged relations following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.

Wang’s visit comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to Tianjin, China, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on August 31–September 1, where he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

    Talks with Indian Leaders

On August 18, Wang Yi met India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. They discussed border tensions, trade, flights, water-sharing agreements, and people-to-people exchanges.

Jaishankar said India and China should respect each other’s interests and make sure “differences do not turn into disputes.” Both sides agreed to continue discussing and working to establish a more stable relationship.

On August 19, Wang is scheduled to meet National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for the 24th round of talks on the boundary issue. These talks are very important because both countries still have around 50,000–60,000 troops stationed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. The two sides will discuss ways to reduce tensions and avoid future conflicts.

Later today, Wang Yi will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence. This meeting is expected to prepare the ground for Modi’s trip to China and show that both countries want to improve ties at the highest level.

    A new initiative

This visit comes after several efforts over the past year to rebuild ties. In October 2024, P.M. Modi and President Xi met in person during the BRICS summit held in Russia. At that meeting, both leaders agreed to restart dialogue and work on the disputed border areas.

Since then, both countries have taken small yet significant steps. India has restarted the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, China has resumed issuing visas to Indian travelers, and talks have started to restore direct flight services between the two countries.

    International Situations

The visit is also taking place at a time when India is facing trade problems with the United States. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump announced heavy tariffs on Indian goods and added penalties for India’s purchase of Russian oil, which resulted in adding pressure on India’s economy.

In this situation, better ties with China may give India more space to handle international challenges. Chinese media have even spoken about a possible “dragon-elephant tango,” suggesting that both countries can work together despite past issues.

    China’s View

China has said Wang’s visit is meant to carry forward the understanding reached by Modi and Xi last year. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing wants to increase political trust, expand cooperation, and manage differences carefully with India.

    Looking Ahead

Experts believe this visit could bring an important step toward improving relations between India and China. However, challenges remain. India is worried about China’s close ties with Pakistan, especially regarding terrorism issues, and the weapons that were supplied to Pakistan, which were observed in Operation Sindoor, were mainly made in China. However, India is taking notes precisely.

Even so, both countries seem to agree that border problems should not stop cooperation in other areas. Wang Yi’s visit, followed by Modi’s trip to China later this month, could open doors for more high-level meetings and a balanced relationship.

For now, this visit shows that India and China are ready to work together, rebuild trust, and trade for a better, stable future.
