Kishor Likely To Challenge Tejashwi Yadav In Raghopur

Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has indicated that Raghopur, the assembly seat held by Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, could be his preferred battleground in the upcoming state elections.

He described Raghopur as a significant “karmbhoomi” seat, noting that with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar being a member of the Legislative Council, the LoP’s constituency carries symbolic weight. Political observers point out that Kishor, while positioning himself as a third alternative to the NDA and INDIA bloc, has also kept open the option of contesting from Karahgar in Rohtas district.

His final decision, he said, would rest with his party. Kishor has been travelling extensively across Bihar under the Jan Suraaj campaign, holding padyatras and public meetings to build grassroots connections.

His entry into the electoral contest is being closely watched, as this will be his first attempt at contesting an assembly seat after years of working as a political strategist. Raghopur has historically been an RJD stronghold, with both Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi having represented it.

Tejashwi Yadav currently holds the seat, winning in 2020 with nearly half the vote share. The BJP had finished second that year with close to 30% of the votes, while the 2015 contest was much tighter.

The RJD regards Raghopur as a legacy seat, making it a prestige battle for Tejashwi Yadav. Karahgar, a constituency created after delimitation, has alternated between the JD(U) and the Congress in recent elections.

In 2020, Congress’s Santosh Kumar Mishra won narrowly ahead of the JD(U). In 2015, however, the seat was held by the JD(U).

Karahgar has often delivered fragmented results with no single party establishing long-term dominance, making it a potential testing ground for a new outfit like the Jan Suraaj Party.

Raghopur remains a focal point in Bihar’s electoral politics due to its association with the RJD’s leadership, while Karahgar presents a different challenge with its history of shifting loyalties. Analysts suggest that if Kishor chooses Raghopur, the contest could attract national attention because of the high-profile clash.

Kishor’s choice between the two seats is expected to shape his party’s positioning in the polls.
