A 45-year-old tribal woman from Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district was brutally gang-raped and tortured, leading to her death due to excessive bleeding. The incident has ignited nationwide protests and calls for swift justice, highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities faced by women in marginalized communities.
On the night of May 23, 2025, in the Khalwa tehsil of Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, a 45-year-old tribal woman was subjected to a heinous crime that has shocked the nation. While returning from a wedding, she was lured to the house of an acquaintance, where two men, identified as Hari Palvi (35) and Sunil Dhurve (26), allegedly gang-raped and brutally assaulted her. The assault was so severe that it resulted in her intestines protruding, leading to her death due to excessive bleeding.
The victim, a mother of two and a member of the Kurku tribal community, managed to identify her attackers before succumbing to her injuries. Both accused were known to her and resided in the same village. They have been arrested and charged under sections 103(1), 66, and 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, encompassing charges of gang rape and murder.
The brutality of the crime has drawn parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya case, reigniting debates on women’s safety and the effectiveness of the legal system in protecting vulnerable populations. The autopsy report confirmed the extent of the injuries, revealing that over 176 centimeters of the victim’s intestines had been forced out of her body.
In response to the incident, the Congress party organized protests across Madhya Pradesh, condemning the state government’s failure to ensure the safety of women, particularly those from tribal communities. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke with the victim’s family, assuring them of all possible support and demanding swift justice. A delegation, including Mahila Congress president Vibha Patel and Adivasi Congress president Vikrant Bhuria, visited the family and called for a high-level investigation and the implementation of special laws to protect tribal women.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with activists and citizens demanding systemic reforms to address the deep-rooted issues of gender-based violence and the marginalization of tribal communities.
