Delhi Police Bust Fake Medicine Gang

The Delhi Police Crime Branch, in a successful operation, has detained six individuals, including the mastermind of a chain of counterfeit medicine manufacturing and smuggling. The operation was initiated on good intelligence and targeted various locations across three states—Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

Among the seized counterfeit medicines were common medicines like Ultracet, Augmentin, and Betnovate, which are essential in the treatment of common medical conditions. Among the police personnel in the police force deployed were GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Johnson & Johnson drug representatives. Officials of these companies validated that the seized products were actually counterfeits, highlighting the danger to the public’s health posed by these fake drugs.

The group of individuals arrested was engaged in the manufacture and distribution of spurious life-saving drugs, whose intake could have seriously jeopardised the health of patients, as they were depending on genuine medication. The Delhi Police pointed to the serious danger posed by consuming such spurious medicines, which can lead to treatment failure or even side effects.

In raids across multiple districts, police seized massive amounts of fake medicine materials: 150 kilograms of pills, 20 kilograms of capsules, and equipment specially for the manufacturing and packaging of drugs. The huge scale of seizure indicates the nature and extent of illegal operations.

The police crackdown shows efforts made by the Delhi Police and drug companies to stop spurious medicines from reaching and tainting the public chain. It also shows efforts made to maintain public health from illegal production and smuggling operations that destroy confidence in healthcare.

Counterfeiting of drug production is increasing in the world and India, as the fake medicines cannot be under regulatory control, but can lead to severe damage. Having learned that representatives of drug companies engaged in this raid was a significant factor in verifying the authenticity of the fake drugs and the severity of such an offence.

This case reminds us of the need to exercise prudence, correct information gathering, and coordination among agencies in cracking down on operations of counterfeit medicines. Delhi Police Crime Branch is committed to curbing such illegal operations to protect the safety and welfare of citizens.
