On May 20, 2025, Delhi Police arrested 67-year-old Devender Sharma, an Ayurvedic practitioner turned serial killer, infamously known as “Doctor Death.” Sharma was apprehended from an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan, where he had been living under a false identity as a priest after jumping parole in August 2023.
Sharma was convicted in multiple murder cases and was serving life sentences in seven separate cases across Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana. He had also received a death sentence from a Gurgaon court. Police suspect his involvement in over 50 murder cases. Between 2002 and 2004, Sharma and his accomplices lured taxi and truck drivers under the pretense of providing transportation services, murdered them, and sold their vehicles in the grey market. To eliminate evidence, they disposed of the bodies in the crocodile-infested Hazara Canal in Uttar Pradesh.
Sharma’s criminal activities date back to the 1990s when he operated an illicit kidney transplant racket, facilitating over 125 illegal transplants between 1995 and 2004 with the help of doctors and middlemen across several states. He turned to crime after incurring financial losses in a failed gas dealership deal in 1994, which led him to establish a fake gas agency and engage in organ trafficking.
This is not the first time Sharma has absconded while on parole. In January 2020, he was granted a 20-day parole but remained at large for seven months before being arrested in July 2020. In June 2023, he was granted parole again for two months, but disappeared after August 3, 2023. Following a six-month-long operation spanning several cities, including Aligarh, Jaipur, Delhi, Agra, and Prayagraj, the Delhi Police Crime Branch tracked him to the ashram in Dausa.
