Every year, this day is celebrated and observed as World Heritage Day which is also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites. This annual occasion aids as a reminder of the importance of protecting and preserving the cultural and natural heritage sites that represent the rich culture of human history and our planet’s biodiversity.
International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) established this day in the year 1982, which was later on endorsed by UNESCO. The main aim of World Heritage Day is to promote awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that is required to protect and conserve it. This day encourages local communities and individuals to consider the significance of cultural heritage in their lives, identities and communities.
Various events and activities like guided tours, educational seminars, exhibitions and community outreach programs are organised to celebrate this day all around the world. This, in turn, helps us to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation towards the heritage sites and encourages collective responsibility for their preservation.
India, with over 43 heritage sites recognised by UNESCO, actively participates in World Heritage Day’s celebrations every year. Our country truly is a testament to the deep depths of history and ecological diversity, with architectural marvels like the Taj Mahal and Khajuraho Temples, just to name a few.
Due to issues like urbanisation, environmental degradation and climate change, these heritage sites are in danger. Conservation efforts need to be done in many directions, tackling it down, through methods like community engagement, policy making and sustainable tourism practices. World Heritage Day serves as a platform to discuss these challenges and strategise on effective preservation methods.
As we observe World Heritage Day 2025, it is imperative to recognise that preserving heritage is not just about protecting monuments and sites; it’s about safeguarding the stories, traditions, and knowledge systems that define humanity. By valuing and protecting our heritage, we enrich our understanding of the past and pave the way for a more inclusive and culturally aware future.
