A wave of massive protests have erupted across India as thousands of aspirants and coaching teachers display anger over alleged mismanagement of Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams. The SSC is responsible for conducting recruitment exams for various central government jobs.
The SSC exam is considered as the most competitive government exams in India, and every year lakhs of students spend many hours preparing for it.
However, the examinations for 2025 became chaotic due to technical glitches, irregularities and cancellation of the exam at the last moment, causing distress among the candidates who had spent years preparing for this exam.
What Went Wrong?
Many students reported server crashes, failure of biometric verification, and sudden cancellations of exam shifts in several exam centers. Some had to travel for miles just to discover the exam was rescheduled or canceled without prior notice. In some cases, biometric machines failed to recognize candidates’ fingerprints, which led to cancellation of entry despite having valid admit cards.
It has been reported that many candidates who appeared for the exams on July 30 and 31 encountered same problems of system crashes and mismanagement of the examination centers.
Some coaching institutes and educators including names like Neetu Singh joined the protests airing their grievances on the innumerable systemic failures.
Protest Intensification
Initially, protests began in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh but spread nationwide once clips and images of police lathi-charging students went viral. In some regions, peacefully protesting students were beaten down, injuring some and instilling panic among many.
Footage from Patna, Varanasi, and Delhi showed students in massive gatherings demanding accountability and reforms. Several hashtags began trending under #SSCMismanagement, #SSCSystemSudharo and #JusticeForAspirants on all social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook as students narrated their experiences and clamored for justice.
There have been influencers, teachers, and public celebrities who also supported students while blaming the system for hurting aspirants who otherwise see government jobs as the surest avenue toward stability and financial security.
Till now, the SSC has put out a short statement highlighting “technical issues” and has assured that steps will be taken to address the grievances. This has since been criticized for its vague nature and impotence. No formal apology has been made, nor timeline given on re-examinations or ensuring a fair selection process.
Government officials stood mostly mute, adding to the agony of victims. The Ministry is anticipated to hold a meeting this week to discuss the issue, although no confirmation has been made.
The protests have now started to become larger, and the focus is now put on the government and SSC authorities to admit their failure and introspect and get a way out on an urgent basis.
