Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Guwahati on Thursday evening on a two-day visit during which he chaired the BJP’s core committee meeting, inaugurated the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, and addressed party and public programmes in the run-up to the 2026 Assam assembly elections.

He was received at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP state chief Dilip Saikia.

Shah chaired the BJP’s core committee meeting in Guwahati and inaugurated the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory to strengthen cyber security in the region.

On Friday, he addressed the NDA Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan, formally launching the BJP’s election campaign for the upcoming polls. He also participated in the birth centenary celebrations of former chief minister Golap Borbora.

In his address, Shah underlined that the BJP-led NDA is confident of returning to power in Assam for a third consecutive term. He attributed this to the development initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the national level and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s welfare schemes in Assam.

Shah stressed that the BJP would not allow leaders sympathetic to infiltrators and encroachers to determine the state’s future. He recalled that the Assam government had freed over 1.29 lakh acres of land from encroachment and restored the sanctity of Vaishnavite monasteries founded by Srimanta Sankardeva and Mahapurush Madhavdeva.

Targeting Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, Shah said the state could not be led by politicians with links to Pakistan or those opposing eviction drives against illegal settlers. He referred to allegations that Gogoi’s wife had travelled frequently between India and Pakistan and noted that Gogoi had opposed the state’s land-clearance operations.

Shah highlighted the Sarma government’s social reforms, including schemes for girls’ education, with over nine lakh beneficiaries receiving scholarships. He claimed the Congress had been wiped out in recent rural polls, pointing out that BJP had consistently won Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, by-elections and autonomous council polls since 2021.

The Union Home Minister credited Narendra Modi with popularising Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, citing the 125-feet statue and translation of his biography into 23 languages. He further said peace had returned to Assam under Modi’s leadership, with over 10,000 youths surrendering arms and multiple peace accords signed.

Shah also noted that the Advantage Assam summit had secured investment MoUs worth over ₹5 lakh crore, with major projects such as Tata’s ₹27,000 crore semiconductor factory at Jagiroad already underway. He added that the government had provided 1.21 lakh jobs in four years without corruption or nepotism, surpassing its initial target of one lakh.
