Shubman Gill breaks numerous records in his 269-run knock as India ends Day 2 by bagging 3 English wickets after getting bowled out on 587, thanks to Akash Deep’s double-wicket over.
The 2025 India’s Test tour to England has already been one to remember, Shubman Gill’s double hundred has become another moment as the Indian captain perished when he was just 31 runs shy of a maiden Triple Hundred in Test Cricket on Day 2 of the 2nd Test between England and India at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Thursday.
The Day started with Gill continuing to add runs to his overnight score of 114 runs. In contrast, Ravindra Jadeja provided valuable support to the Indian Skipper as the left-hander just fell 11 runs short of a memorable century as he became the maiden victim of Josh Tongue. Jadeja’s wicket was the sole success England tasted in the morning session of the day’s play.
Gill’s knock was nothing short of historic as he cracked multiple records on his way to 269 runs. He got out due to a soft dismissal as he tried to pull a Josh Tongue delivery towards the leg side, as he holed it out to Ollie Pope. Everyone gave a big round of applause to the Indian Captain who struck 30 fours and 3 maximums in his majestic knock, which will be remembered for ages.
Gill had another important partnership during his innings, this time a 144-run seventh-wicket partnership with Tamil Nadu All-rounder Washington Sundar. Washington scored 42 runs before falling to a ripper by Joe Root. The Gill-Sundar Partnership ensured India’s score swelled over 500 runs.
England, who had a horrific day with the ball, faced another disaster as they lost the centurions at Headingly, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, in consecutive deliveries bowled by Akash Deep during the third over of England’s innings. Later, Mohammad Siraj handed the hosts another blow as he sent back Zak Crawley. A 52-run stand between England’s white-ball skipper Harry Brook and Joe Root ensured England won’t lose any further wickets by the end of day’s play.
England is now under tremendous pressure as they have lost three big wickets, and they still have a 510-run deficit. England’s Middle and Lower order will have to stage a fightback with Brook and Root needing to score runs at a quicker rate, along with the likes of Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith assisting them. On the flip side, the visitors will look to grab early wickets on day 3 with eyes on the Indian Pacers. An enthralling day 3 awaits.
