An assistant professor in a college in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, was arrested on May 15, 2025, on charges of improper conduct during a practical test. The matter happened in one of the colleges in the Ganganahar Police Station region of Haridwar district.
As per reports, assistant professor Dr. Abdul Aleem Ansari was holding a viva examination for fourth-semester BSc students. Students complained that during the exam, Dr. Ansari inappropriately touched them. At first, some of the students believed the touch could have been accidental, but the act allegedly continued. The incident took a serious turn when Dr. Ansari allegedly caught hold of one student’s hand, scribbled his mobile number on it, and requested that she call him in the evening.
Indignant at these actions, the students made a ruckus and went to the college principal, presenting a written complaint describing the incidents. They also reported the issue to the Ganganahar Police Station by phone.
Ganganahar Police Station In-charge R.K. Saklani said, “On receiving information, police arrived at the college and arrested the professor.” Students and teachers flocked to the police station, seeking stringent action against the accused professor. The victim students lodged a written complaint (tahrir) against him. On the basis of the complaint, a case was lodged, and Dr. Ansari was arrested. He lives in Kurkawal, Doiwala, Dehradun.
This is the second such case that has come to light in Roorkee in a fortnight. A week ago, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee had sacked 60-year-old Professor Zillur Rahman on a charge of sexual harassment by a female PhD student. A committee held an inquiry and concluded that the professor was guilty, after which he was let go.
