South Africa has wrapped up the ODI series against Australia with one game still to spare, claiming a hard-fought 84-run win in the second match at Mackay. The victory gave the Proteas a 2-0 lead in the three-match contest and underlined their growing authority in the limited-overs format.
Batting first, South Africa didn’t have it all their way but still managed to scrape together a
competitive 277. Matthew Breetzke was once again the standout, playing with fluency to
score 88 from 78 balls. Tristan Stubbs added 74, and the pair gave the innings its backbone
after a shaky start. Adam Zampa was Australia’s best bowler with three wickets, but the
visitors had already done enough damage by the time the middle order walked off.
The chase never really clicked for Australia. Josh Inglis fought a lone battle with a spirited
87, but support was scarce. Regular wickets meant the required run rate kept climbing, and
the innings eventually folded for 193 in the 38th over. Lungi Ngidi was the destroyer-in-chief, taking five wickets and breaking the back of Australia’s middle order with sharp pace and accuracy.
For South Africa, the win meant more than just numbers on the board. It was proof that the new faces can step up while the senior players still do the heavy lifting. Matthew Breetzke played without fear at the top, while Lungi Ngidi reminded everyone why he remains such a key figure on this side.
Captain Aiden Markram will be pleased with how his side handled pressure in back-to-back
games away from home. Australia, meanwhile, will be left frustrated. Their batting collapses have now become a worrying trend, and with just one match left, they can only hope to avoid a clean sweep.
South Africa, on the other hand, will travel into the final ODI with the luxury of knowing the
series is already theirs—a rare and satisfying position against one of cricket’s toughest
opponents.
