Despite the renewal announcement coming out in April, Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled for season 2. The show, which premiered in December 2024 and wrapped up in February 2025, will end with just one season.
The cancellation has come as a surprise, considering it was already renewed for season 2. Neither the series’ network nor Paramount has officially backed up the sudden cancellation news with any clear reason.
Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to the hit show Dexter, received mixed responses. The show holds a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Metacritic labeled it ‘average’ at 50/100. It also struggled to critically stand out, offering only recycled storylines. Yet, Dexter: Original Sin managed to make waves among loyal Dexter fans, while also growing its audience through the finale.
Dexter: Original Sin cast Patrick Gibson in the lead, playing young Dexter Morgan. His performance was widely praised, perfectly capturing Michael C. Hall’s early Dexter energy. Christian Slater took on the role of Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father, whose ‘code’ shapes the character’s dark path. Molly Brown added a spark as Debra Morgan, showcasing the siblings’ bond at its earliest.
The return of familiar names like James Martinez’s Angel Batista and Christina Milian’s Maria LaGuerta also gave fans a nostalgic link to the original Dexter world.
For Dexter fans, this is surely a blow to the chest. On social media, viewers were quick to express their anger and disbelief, following the season 2 cancellation. The cancellation, especially after its renewal earlier this year, has left many devastated. One viewer called it “the stupidest and cruelest thing Paramount has ever done”, while another said “the cast deserves so much better”. Many insist the show had a lot of potential and plenty of story to tell.
The original Dexter (2006-2013) remains one of the most popular serial-killer/crime shows. Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of a charming and moral serial killer earned him a lot of acclaim, Golden Globes, and a loyal cult following.
The future of the Dexter franchise now feels uncertain, with Dexter: New Blood ending in 2022 and Original Sin abruptly cancelled. But fans are clearly disappointed. There are still plenty of stories left to tell. Will Paramount revive the saga with something new? Or is this the end of the franchise? We will know.
