On May 31, 2025, Indore marked a significant milestone by becoming the first city in Madhya Pradesh to commence metro rail services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indore Metro’s initial phase via video link from Bhopal, coinciding with the 300th birth anniversary of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar.
The inaugural segment, termed the “Super Priority Corridor,” spans approximately 6 kilometres and includes five stations named after prominent women figures: Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, Rani Durgavati, Maharani Laxmi Bai, Rani Avantibai Lodhi, and Veerangana Jhalkaribai. This corridor connects Gandhi Nagar Station to Station No. 3 on the Super Corridor, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility in the city.

The broader Indore Metro project envisions a 31.32-kilometre network with 28 stations, combining elevated and underground sections. The estimated cost is ₹7,500 crore, with the initial 6-kilometre stretch constructed at approximately ₹1,520 crore.
This development positions Indore as India’s 16th city to operate a metro rail system, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainable and modern transportation solutions. The metro is expected to significantly reduce travel time, decrease vehicular pollution, and contribute to the city’s economic growth.
While Indore celebrates this advancement, other cities in Madhya Pradesh, such as Bhopal, are still progressing towards operational metro services. Bhopal’s metro project, which began concurrently with Indore’s, faces delays and is projected to commence operations post-monsoon.
Indore has, hence, set a precedent for future projects across Madhya Pradesh as the pioneer in urban infrastructure development within the state.
