Jane Birkin’s Iconic Hermès Handbag Sells For $10 Million

The sale was part of Sotheby’s “Fashion Icons” auction, a curated collection of iconic garments, and among them was the one-of-a-kind Birkin, created in 1885 as the prototype.

Created by the writing timing, when Jane Birkin happened to be sitting aboard a flight next to Hermés CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, the bag was tailored to be functional, roomy, timeless, and chic. Unlike the other Birkins, Jane’s Birkin featured brass hardware, custom shoulder straps, and her initials; it was a custom size as well.

This most expensive luxury bag became a global phenomenon and was referenced in pop culture for its exclusivity and demand. She carried the bag religiously for a decade, auctioning it off in 1994 for AIDS research, and it remained privately owned since 2000, until now.

Nine collectors from around the world were involved in the bidding war that began at €1 million and rapidly went up. The winning bid came from a private Japanese collector, who secured the piece for €7 million, with fees bringing the total to €8.6 million. Live-streamed globally, the moment drew tens of thousands of viewers online, a testament to the enduring cultural grip of both Hermès and Jane Birkin.

The sale represents the highest amount ever paid for a handbag at auction. It also holds the title of the second-most valuable fashion item ever sold, coming in after Judy Garland’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, which sold for $32.5 million in 2024. According to Sotheby’s, the Birkin now holds “Mona Lisa” status within fashion, a once-functional object that has been transformed into a symbol of power, femininity, and cultural memory.

The original Birkin’s value is unmatched. It wasn’t just a namesake; Jane Birkin used it and left an imprint. This moment also reflects a broader shift: fashion collectables are no longer mere luxuries, but investments. As the world increasingly values storytelling and authenticity, items like this Birkin become proof of the icons who defined generations.

As a Sotheby’s specialist put it, “This isn’t just a bag. It’s the origin of a revolution in luxury. It’s a love letter to function, femininity, and French cool.”
