How A Broken Board Changed A Life

The World of Skateboarding isn’t only about flaunting tricks and riding on ramps; it is a constant chase for flight, thrill, and freedom. From the alleyway of a parking lot to cracked asphalt streets to the notorious downhills, the life of a skateboarder is all about relentless practice and immeasurable love for a four-wheeled board. Although we call it a four-wheeled board, it is more than just a partner for skateboarders. But when it breaks, it also breaks their heart. However, a skateboarder from Navi Mumbai was inspired by a broken board to represent Maharashtra at the national level. This is a short but inspiring and impactful story of Vikas Mandal.

Back in 2018, this young boy found an interesting sport which is placed at an international level called skateboarding, which is also known as ‘Longboarding’. Even after facing opposition from his family, Vikas got excellent guidance from his first mentor, Sagar Gharat. Vikas had slow but steady progress as he spent the majority of his time refining his skills.

Vikas had a memorable competitive longboarding debut when he took part in a competition by Decathlon in Belapur, Navi Mumbai. He went on to win the competition, which turned out to be a major game-changer for the amateur longboarder. But it was in 2019 when he gained a major interest in skateboarding. Vikas went on to represent Maharashtra in the National Skateboarding Championship in Chandigarh, back in 2020, where he finished as runners-up.

On discovering the growing awareness about skateboarding in India, Vikas started multiple workshops for free all over the country. It is to create awareness about having skateboarding as a sport and portraying its growing popularity among youngsters in India. Vikas has also featured in multiple advertisements of big brands like Skybags, Decathlon, and IQOO. Along with that, He was also involved with Ubon and Red Bull.
