India has officially launched its next-generation e-passports, integrating biometric data and RFID chips to enhance travel security and efficiency. The rollout, part of the Passport Seva Programme 2.0, commenced in 2024 and is expanding nationwide in 2025.
What is an e-Passport?
An e-passport is a traditional passport enhanced with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna embedded in its cover. This chip securely stores the holder’s personal and biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition details. A gold symbol on the passport’s front cover indicates its electronic capability.

Launch Timeline and Coverage
The pilot phase began in April 2024 in cities like Nagpur and Bhubaneswar. As of May 2025, e-passports are being issued in 13 cities, including Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, and Ranchi. The Ministry of External Affairs aims for a nationwide rollout by mid-2025.
Key Benefits
- Enhanced Security: The embedded chip reduces risks of identity theft and passport duplication.
- Faster Immigration: Compatibility with automated e-gates facilitates quicker border clearance.
- Global Recognition: Aligns with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, ensuring wider acceptance.
- Data Integrity: Encrypted storage of personal information enhances data protection.
Application Process: Citizens can apply for e-passports through the Passport Seva Portal. The process involves online application, appointment scheduling, and biometric data submission at designated centers. Existing passports remain valid until expiry; renewal will transition to e-passports.
