In a dramatic move towards automation, Duolingo has announced its transition into an AI-first organisation, which means it will gradually replace contract workers with artificial intelligence. This move aims to enhance scalability and efficiency in content creation. It all comes together and serves the company’s mission to make language education more accessible.


According to a company-wide communication from Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn, the plan is to “gradually stop using contractors to do work that AI can handle.” This decision is in line with the company’s broader initiative to integrate AI into most other aspects of their operations, including hiring practices and performance evaluations. The goal is to eliminate repetitive tasks so that the employees can focus on more creative and meaningful work.
The integration of AI has already yielded positive results so far. Duolingo recently launched 148 new language courses, which is more than double of what it had been offering previously, all thanks to AI-driven content development. This expansion was achieved in less than one year, which otherwise would have taken years to accomplish. The company attributes this rapid growth to its new ‘shared content’ system, which allows for quick customisation of base courses across multiple languages.
Despite the shift to AI directly reducing its contract workers, Duolingo assures that it is committed to supporting its employees during this transition. The company also highlighted that their full-time staff will not be affected and will receive training to adapt to this transition.
Duolingo’s move comes at a time when companies are increasingly leveraging AI to streamline their operations, emboldening this growing trend of shifting to AI.
