DU Professor Booked Under POCSO for Abusing Minor Student

A Delhi University professor, already accused in past misconduct cases, now faces POCSO charges for allegedly sexually abusing a minor student. Investigations are underway.

A professor from a Delhi University college has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after a minor student accused him of sexual harassment and abuse.

According to senior police officials, the FIR was registered last week, but the accused professor has not been arrested yet. “We are investigating the matter and will soon call him in for questioning,” an officer said. The complaint was originally filed by the student in December 2024 with the college’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). Sources from the college confirmed that the student is a minor and the complaint involved serious allegations of sexual harassment and assault, which led to the POCSO Act being invoked.

The ICC has been conducting an internal inquiry since December. In response to the complaint, the ICC recommended that the professor be kept off campus and barred from contacting students until the investigation is complete. The internal report is expected in the next two weeks.

This is not the first time the professor has faced misconduct allegations. College and university sources revealed that three previous complaints were filed against him in 2016, 2020, and 2023. However, no action was taken in any of those cases. “Each time, the complaints were buried,” said a college official. “There was always pressure not to escalate the issue.”

Following these latest allegations, the Delhi Police has officially asked the college administration to provide all details related to the professor. The police have also notified the administration about the registered FIR. College sources said the administration is now planning to seek legal advice on how to proceed with the case.

In January 2025, after several student groups held protests demanding strict action, the accused professor resigned from his administrative post, writing to the Vice-Chancellor:
“Due to these allegations, I am finding it extremely challenging to continue my additional duties.” Later that same month, the college confirmed that the professor had been suspended for six weeks. At present, both the Delhi Police investigation and the university-level inquiry are ongoing. When contacted, the college principal declined to comment on the matter.
