Novak Djokovic once again proved why he’s known for his incredible resilience at the Shanghai Masters. Battling a leg injury and sweltering conditions, the world No. 1 fought past Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in a gripping third-round encounter that lasted two hours and 41 minutes.
The match tested Djokovic’s limits both physically and mentally. Struggling with discomfort in his left leg, he even took a medical timeout midway through the contest. The humid Shanghai weather, hovering around 30°C with nearly 80% humidity, made things even tougher for the 38-year-old. At one point, the Serbian star looked visibly drained, and after clinching victory, he dropped to the court in exhaustion, a testament to the sheer effort he put in.
Yet, as always, Djokovic’s determination shone through. Despite the pain and fatigue, he refused to give in and ended up creating another record in the process. At 38 years and 133 days, he became the oldest player ever to reach a Masters 1000 quarter final, surpassing Roger Federer’s previous record.
Up next, Djokovic will take on Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the quarter-finals. With several top names, including Jannik Sinner, already sidelined due to injuries or withdrawals, the Serb now stands as one of the favourites to go all the way in Shanghai.
Once again, Djokovic reminded the world why he continues to dominate men’s tennis, not just through his skill and experience, but through his incredible mental strength and unbreakable will to win.
