For former FBI Director James Comey, a random post from a stroll on the beach has created much hassle for him and the White House. Comey posted a picture of seashells that resembled the code ‘8647’ and captioned it as “Cool shell formation on my beach walk”. The cryptic code has more meaning to it than it looks. “86” can mean to “eliminate” someone, while “47” may refer to the 47th President of the United States, who happens to be Donald Trump. Adding together, it would simply mean to assassinate the POTUS.
The social media post has now become viral with Homeland Security Secretary declaring on X that the “Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service were treating the matter as a potential threat against the President”.
The Secret Service, on the other hand, has already begun an investigation. A spokesperson of the Secret Service informed CNN that a vigorous investigation is underway and that the service takes any potential threat to the President as a serious threat which is of high responsibility.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who was recently appointed, has expressed confirmation of the FBI being in touch with the Secret Service, stating on X: “We are in communication with the Secret Service and the Director.
The matter is very serious given the fact that an assassination attempt on Trump had occurred a year ago on July 13, 2024. Trump was shot in the right ear while delivering a campaign speech in Pennsylvania. The shooter, a 19-year-old lone wolf, was killed on the spot by the Secret Service. However, the assassination attempt changed the trajectory of the 2024 Presidential election, with Trump gaining more than expected followers.
The matter has gained such high attention due to Comey’s history with Trump. He was appointed as the FBI Director in 2013 by President Barack Obama. During the first term of Trump, just four months into the office, Comey was fired by the POTUS with no stated reasons. Later on, Comey went on to write his memoir, “A Higher Loyalty”, which became a bestseller. He soon became the defender of the rule of law against Trump’s abuses of power.
Though various agencies have expressed that an investigation might happen, as of now, no charges have been filed. Any changes can only be pressed if there is a high level of evidence, which this case lacks, according to the requirements of the American legal system. But all the drama has ignited political speeches and debates.
