After the remarks made by the Texas Governor, a video emerged showing a Muslim cleric, who used a loudspeaker to urge the shopkeepers not to sell pork, liquor, or lottery tickets.
Greg Abbott has described the incident as “harassment” and stated that Texas would not tolerate any attempts to enforce the religious codes in public life.
On 9 September, Greg Abbott wrote in a social media post on X that he had signed the laws banning Sharia Law and Sharia Compounds in Texas. He added that no individual or business should fear such fools.
Texas Governor urged the residents to report any attempts made by this person or anyone to impose Sharia compliance on the local law enforcement or the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Texas has no formal ban on Sharia Law, but the 2017 American Laws for American Courts Bill prevents the courts from applying any religious or foreign codes, including Sharia Law, if they conflict with US law.
The statements given by Greg Abbott were criticised by Muslim advocacy groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), as misleading. The groups stressed that Sharia Law governs personal religious practices and not civil law.
Earlier in 2025, Greg opposed the East Plano Islamic Centre (EPIC) City, a proposed 400-acre residential and commercial development by EPIC. This project included schools, homes, commercial facilities, and a mosque.
Greg claimed that it could become a “Sharia zone” and ordered several state agencies to investigate.
According to the critics, Abbott exaggerated the threat and warned of religious profiling.
