    Stop Aggression Towards Children!

The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is an annual United Nations observance held on June 4. It was established on 19 August 1982. It originally focused on the Victims of the 1986 Lebanon War. Its mission was broadened to “acknowledge the pain endured by children who are the victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse worldwide.” The UN’s dedication to defending children’s rights is reaffirmed on this day.

The General Assembly made this decision at its 31st plenary meeting on August 19, 1982, after it had been “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression” during its seventh emergency special session.

This day is regarded for children who live in conflict zones across the world see horrible atrocities daily. They cannot safely study in school, play outside, sleep in their homes, or go to hospitals for medical attention. Children are being caught in the crosshairs of warring parties on an unprecedented scale, from murdering and maiming, kidnapping and sexual abuse, to attacks on health and education institutions, and the denial of the humanitarian aid they so badly need.

According to the UN, in 2023 alone, 11,649 children were killed and maimed. This was mainly caused by explosives and explosive remnants. Moreover, in countries like the Republic of Congo, Somalia and Nigeria, 8,655 children were used and abducted, while 30% of them were girls.

Due to shame and a lack of legal protection, sexual assault in war is the most serious violation that goes unreported for both boys and girls. Although occurrences of sexual violence against boys also increased, over 90% of sexual violence was committed against girls, who are disproportionately affected by forced marriage and sexual assault.

Furthermore, the denial of humanitarian access has increased by 32%. For 2024, it is expected to deteriorate as strict regulations have been adopted in areas like Afghanistan, Myanmar and Sudan. However, Palestine remains neglected, as the very basic humanitarian facilities have been deprived, and the children face a major grave ultimatum due to the threat of famine and genocide.

Thus, this day marks a milestone towards ending the agony of children, those who endure all sorts of threats and give them a justified life.  The most effective way to protect children from hostilities is to eliminate the push and pull factors that lead to their involvement in armed conflict.
