An important meeting of the Punjab Cabinet was conducted in Chandigarh today. It sanctioned the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Sacred Texts Bill, 2025. The legislation seeks to impose severe legal consequences for incidents of desecrating religious texts from every religion.
As per the conditions of the recently approved legislation, anyone discovered to be directly or indirectly engaged in acts of disrespect toward sacred texts such as the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible, Quran Sharif, and more will face severe penalties. The crime may result in a sentence of as much as life in prison.
The government declared that the legislation aims to provide enhanced legal protection for religious feelings and to maintain social harmony within the state. Meeting officials highlighted that safeguarding the respect for all faiths is essential for ensuring harmony and togetherness among the people. The Cabinet considers this legal action crucial to prevent behaviors that may disrupt social harmony.
The legislation further specifies that these offenses will be addressed seriously regardless of whether they are committed intentionally or indirectly, thus broadening the range of responsibility in these instances.
Alongside the Sacred Texts Bill, the Cabinet also endorsed the Punjab Regulation of Crusher Units and Stockists and Retailer Rules, 2025. This updated regulatory framework aims to provide more defined guidelines and supervision for crusher operations and companies handling raw materials. The decision is viewed as a step to tackle issues associated with unregulated activities in this field.
The Cabinet meeting was held to assess important policy areas and legal issues, and the endorsement of both laws signifies important legislative progress on delicate and administrative topics.
Officials have indicated that the enforcement of these laws will now move forward according to legislative protocols, with upcoming actions expected to involve a presentation to the state legislature and final notice for implementation.
