Pakistan to chair Taliban Sanctions Committee; India Reacts

Pakistan has been elected to lead the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) 1988 Taliban sanctions committee in 2025. The country will work as the vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN. According to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, Pakistan’s work on the counter-terrorism committee is a designation without much practical consequence.

Pakistan as a non-permanent member

Being a non-permanent member, Pakistan will co-chair two Informal Working Groups (IWG) of the 15-nation UN body for the 2025-2026 term. One informal group focused on documentation and procedural matters, the other gave importance to general sanctions issues.

Pakistan as the Vice-Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee

Pakistan will be working as the vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the 15-nation UN body. Denmark will serve on the 1267 ISIL and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the UNSC. Russia and Sierra Leone will also work as vice-chairs for 2025. Pakistan will co-chair the documentation IWG with Denmark and the general Sanctions IWG with Greece.

Pakistan to lead the Taliban Sanctions Committee of the UNSC

Pakistan wanted the 1267 Sanctions Committee, 1540 (Non-Proliferation) Sanctions Committee, 1988 (Taliban) Committee, and chair of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC). The country only secured the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee.

India Previously Chaired the UNSC’s Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022

India previously chaired the UNSC’s Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022 during its 2021-2022 term as a non-permanent member. India highlighted Pakistan’s support for UN-designated terrorists and terror outfits.

India Reacts to Pakistan’s Chair for the Taliban Sanctions Committee of the UNSC

Having chaired the Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022, India criticized Pakistan for its support of UN-designated terrorists. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the United Nations Security Council for appointing Pakistan as the vice-chair of the anti-terror committee.
