    Om Birla To Lead India At Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

    Om Birla will head the Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, one of the world’s oldest and largest parliamentary bodies. It is the largest annual gathering of parliamentarians from 56 Commonwealth countries.

    Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will head the Indian Parliamentary Delegation on the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), scheduled to be held in Bridgetown, Barbados, from 5 to 12 October 2025. This will be the largest annual gathering of parliamentarians from 180 national and sub-national legislatures spread across the 56 Commonwealth countries. 

    India is sending one of its largest delegations ever, reflecting its emphasis on parliamentary diplomacy and democratic dialogue. Om Birla, who is leading the Indian side, will also represent India in the General Assembly of the CPC. Along with him, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and Presiding officers and secretaries from 29 state legislatures and Union territories, will also be present.

    The Pre-Conference briefing was held at Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi, which was again chaired by Speaker Om Birla. Presiding officers, secretaries of legislative bodies, and senior officers of key ministries were also participants in the briefing. 

    The briefing covered explaining the CPC programme, workshop themes, expected contributions, and India’s role. Ministries also briefed delegates on subjects relevant to their discussions at Barbados.

    The theme of this year’s CPC is “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner.” The theme highlights the Commonwealth’s role in multilateralism. Stressing collective responses to global challenges: democracy, climate change, governance, and inclusivity. The CPC features seven workshops where Indian delegates will participate and contribute:

    • Strengthening Democratic Institutions
    • Digital Transformation in Governance
    • Pre-CHOGM 2026 Workshop: Gender & Accessibility
    • Climate Change & Global Health
    • Financial Transparency in Democratic Governance
    • National vs Sub-national Legislative Powers
    • Role of the Commonwealth in Good Governance & Multilateralism
    • Policy recommendations and resolutions on democratic strengthening
    • Youth empowerment and global cooperation
    • Enhanced parliamentary ties between India and Caribbean nations
    • A stronger voice for India in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPC), reinforcing its image as a democratic powerhouse.
