KN Rajanna Removed After Vote Theft Remarks

On August 11, Karnataka’s Cooperation Minister K. N. Rajanna stepped down following controversial remarks about alleged voter list irregularities, remarks that ran counter to his party’s official position.

Rajanna, widely regarded as a close aide of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stoked controversy by candidly acknowledging irregularities in the electoral rolls during his own party’s rule. In particular, he posed critical questions: “When was the voter list prepared? It was during our government’s ruling time. At that time, was everyone sitting with their eyes closed that no one spoke?” He added, “These irregularities did take place… we should feel ashamed.” His remarks turned against the Congress’s stance and triggered political backlash.

The Congress high command acted swiftly. Within just six hours, Rajanna was asked to resign, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally recommended his removal to the Governor who accepted it late that day.

After stepping down, Rajanna voiced strong objections. He claimed his remarks had been “misunderstood” and spoke of a “big conspiracy” behind his dismissal. Determined to clear his name, he said he would travel to Delhi to meet Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders to resolve the misunderstandings.

Rajanna later expressed support for Rahul Gandhi’s “vote theft” allegations which he had initially questioned and reaffirmed his loyalty to the party. He stated that his intent was to “clear misconceptions” not to start a conspiracy.

The fallout was felt beyond the corridors of power. In Tumakuru and in other parts of Karnataka, supporters rallied to express solidarity with Rajanna. Reports indicate that thousands protested his removal, and in one incident, a supporter even attempted self-immolation underlining the emotional intensity of the response

Meanwhile, BJP leaders criticized that the Congress, punished Rajanna for speaking the truth rather than supporting the party line.

    K. N. Rajanna, born on 13 April 1951, is a Congress politician from Madhugiri. He has been working as a cooperation minister under CM Siddaramaiah since May 2023.

Rajanna’s resignation provides a clear view on growing tensions within the Congress party over internal dissent and narrative control. His public remarks and his immediate dismissal by the high command have made it obvious that the high command wasn’t going to tolerate public disagreement, especially regarding such sensitive electoral allegations.
