In a region hanging by a thread, India is racing against time to protect its own.
As the Iran-Israel conflict escalates, concerns are growing for the safety of over 1,500 Indian students studying in Iranian universities. Most of these students, largely from Jammu and Kashmir, now find themselves stranded amid airspace closures and limited evacuation routes.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively monitoring the security situation and engaging with Indian students to ensure their safety. In certain cases, students are being relocated to safer zones with the Embassy’s assistance. The MEA is also evaluating contingency plans, including potential evacuation routes, as the situation remains fluid.
Although initial outreach was limited, the MEA has since confirmed active relocation efforts, launched emergency helplines, and issued regular advisories via a dedicated Telegram channel. On June 15, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced it is relocating students within Iran, issued emergency helpline numbers, a dedicated Telegram channel, and frequent embassy advisories to ensure their safety.
Yet, despite government efforts, students have described growing anxiety and uncertainty. Numerous parents have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene immediately.
Political leaders have expressed concern about the situation, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah contacting the MEA to expedite the evacuation process.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has also asked the Union Government to take prompt action to guarantee the safe return of stranded Indian students in Iran. “I earnestly urge the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and take immediate steps to ensure the safe return…”

This diplomatic scramble comes against a backdrop of deepening instability in West Asia. In April, Iran launched an unprecedented missile and drone barrage on Israel, following an Israeli airstrike on its consulate in Damascus. In response, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, a sweeping military campaign aimed at crippling Iran’s military infrastructure and neutralizing its proxy networks across the region. The operation has fuelled worries of a larger regional conflict, with concerns for civilian populations, especially foreign nationals such as Indian students.
With repeated appeals from families and growing political pressure, Indian authorities are actively coordinating with local agencies to ensure the safety of nationals stranded far from home. As efforts continue on the ground, what remains to be seen is how the situation unfolds and whether diplomacy and preparedness can outpace the pace of conflict.
