The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three men in connection with a grenade attack on a police post in Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar district of Punjab in December 2024. The NIA has chargesheeted three young men from Rahon village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar: Yugpreet Singh, Jaskaran Singh, and Harjot Singh, for their alleged involvement in a grenade attack on a police post last December.
The trio, linked to the banned Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with attempt to murder.
The incident occurred on December 2, 2024, when a grenade was reportedly hurled at a police post under the Kathgarh police station.
Punjab Police arrested them on December 24 and recovered two illegal weapons and six live cartridges from their possession. No casualties were reported, but the attack raised serious concerns about activities in the region.
The NIA took charge of the investigation from the Punjab Police in March 2025.
In its probe, the agency linked the attack to KZF’s chief, Ranjit Singh alias Neeta, and UK-based operative Jagjit Singh Lahiri, also known as Jagga. Investigators found that Jagga had recruited Yugpreet Singh through an acquaintance in the UK and radicalised him using encrypted messaging apps.
According to the NIA, Jagga sent over ₹4.36 lakh to Yugpreet through a complex network involving Canada-based entities. Yugpreet then recruited Jaskaran and Harjot, and the trio carried out the grenade attack. The agency also confirmed that the grenade was provided by foreign handlers in November 2024.
Further investigation revealed that the grenade was picked up from a “dead drop” location on GT Road in Jalandhar on November 28. A dead drop (or dead letter box) is a hidden location used to pass items or messages without direct contact between people.
The NIA stated that it is actively working to dismantle the wider KZF network. The agency aims to prevent future terror plots, especially those targeting law enforcement, public places, and sensitive infrastructure in the state of Punjab.
