Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan makes a Landmark Debut as the First Indian Comedian to Headline a Hindi Show at Madison Square Garden on August 17, 2025.
Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan has created history by becoming the first Indian comic to headline a Hindi-language show at Madison Square Garden (MSG), New York, one of the world’s most prestigious venues. This 37-year-old comedian from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, made history for Indian comedy on the international stage.
Known for his “sakht launda” persona and heartfelt storytelling, Zakir shared the emotional milestone with fans on Instagram, calling it a “big day” and thanking them for the “standing ovation” and his team for their support. He was fellow comedian Tanmay Bhat and American comedian Hasan Minhaj.
The MSG show was part of Zakir’s ongoing North America tour. The evening blended his signature observational humour, poetic shayari, and raw emotional depth, the qualities that have made him one of India’s most relatable entertainers.
Ahead of the show, his poster lit up Times Square billboards, and he also featured on US media platforms discussing the significance of performing in Hindi at such a global venue.
In an interview with Fox 5 New York, Zakir admitted Madison Square Garden had never figured in his plans. “Comedy is such a small community that we are trying to build in India. In India, the scene is very vibrant, and it’s coming up, and we have reached somehow here,” he said. He also took time to appear in a cooking session with chef Vikas Khanna, adding to the cultural buzz around his tour.
After winning Comedy Central’s India’s Best Stand-Up competition, Zakir’s career took a significant turn to success in 2012. His fame was fueled by his relatable “aam aadmi” style and the “sakht launda” image, which struck a chord with audiences across India. Over time, shows like Haq Se Single, Tathastu, and Chacha Vidhayak Hain Humare strengthened his image as a storyteller who skillfully combines humour and honesty.
Zakir has already made history before by being the first Asian comedian to perform solo at the Sydney Opera House and London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2023.
But performing at Madison Square Garden, often called the “Mecca of Entertainment”, stands out as his biggest stage yet, and a defining victory for Hindi comedy on the world stage.
