An 18-year-old girl residing in Gorakhpur district posted a message on Instagram on 29 July 2025. The alarming message included the girl’s picture, which indicated her preparation to hang herself with a scarf tied to the ceiling fan. The picture was captioned as “Goodbye in my life”.
Meta had sent an alerting email to the Social Media Centre of the DGP Headquarters, Uttar Pradesh, at 12:48 AM, on the night when the user had posted a message. A prompt action was taken on the matter, and it was brought to the attention of the higher authorities.
DGP, Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Rajeev Krishna, issued swift orders to address the emergency signal received by Meta. According to the important details shared by Meta, including the teenager’s contact number linked to her social media post, the Social Media Centre successfully traced her exact location and informed the Gorakhpur District Police about it.
Rescue Operation:
UP Police informed about the case through a post shared on their official X account.
Based on the information and the location details provided by the Social Media Centre, a Sub-Inspector and a female constable from the Belghat Police Station rushed to the residence within 19 minutes.
The police officers communicated with the girl’s family, who led them to her room. Upon reaching the room, officers found the girl was trying to take her life. In a swift response, the scarf was quickly taken off the girl’s neck and her life was saved.
The prompt response by the local police thwarted the tragic act.
What Triggered The Tragic Step?
The girl regained composure and informed the officers that she was a class 12th student and had been mentally disturbed for some time. The reason behind the disturbance was a fight with her boyfriend which took place recently, and resulted in no communication from his end. Since he had stopped talking to the girl, it caused emotional distress, which led to the drastic decision to end her life.
The survivor was given proper counselling, following which she agreed not to repeat such a step in the future. The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the UP Police, who acted swiftly, and even appreciated the support given by the police.
In 2022, an arrangement was made between UP Police and Meta. Since then, whenever any social media user posts content that is related to a suicide attempt or is found to be alarming, either on Facebook or Instagram, Meta alerts the police via email or call, providing all the important details to tackle the situation.
UP Police have achieved success in saving 1,181 lives between 1 January 2023 and 25 July 2025 by swiftly acting on the alarming alerts received by Meta.
