From the doors of Cornell, a smart shirt arrives- powered by AI, washes like regular clothes, and monitors movement like a gym trainer!

Cornell University researchers have recently developed SeamFit, an AI-powered, washable T-shirt that automatically logs body-movement, posture and exercises once in use; completely omitting the requirement of bulky equipment or calibration.

This T-shirt looks and feels like a normal T-shirt but the unique factor is the use of conductive thread that is stitched into its seams to achieve this hi–tech feat. The conductive thread senses changes in body movement, feeding real-time data into a Bluetooth-enabled circuit board that is attached at the collar. Using a custom machine-learning model, the system then logs repetitions in body movement and exercise types.

The project was led by Ph.D. student Catherine Yu, under the guidance of Prof. Cheng Zhang, director of Cornell’s Smart Computer Interfaces for Future Interactions (SciFi) Lab. According to a report by David Nutt published in Cornell Chronicle on April 4, 2025, SeamFit achieved an impressive 93.4% accuracy in activity recognition.

Though not yet available commercially for public use, the team will present the technology at UbiComp/ISWC 2025 in Finland this October. This invention is being seen as a breakthrough in smart clothing, with potential applications in fitness, and personalised healthcare- the possibilities are endless.
