Celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations, Russia and Vietnam are enhancing their comprehensive strategic partnership through expanded cooperation in energy, trade, defence, and cultural exchange, reflecting a shared commitment to mutual development and regional stability.
In 2025, Russia and Vietnam commemorate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, a partnership rooted in historical solidarity and evolving into a multifaceted alliance. Established on January 30, 1950, their relationship has matured into a comprehensive strategic partnership, encompassing political dialogue, economic collaboration, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange.
Economic ties have seen significant growth, with bilateral trade reaching $4.59 billion in 2024, marking a 26.4% increase from the previous year. Vietnam’s exports to Russia, including seafood, textiles, and agricultural products, have surged, while imports focus on energy resources like coal and fertiliser. This growth is bolstered by the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025.
Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership. The Vietsovpetro joint venture continues to be a flagship project, with discussions underway for its participation in developing new offshore blocks and renewable energy initiatives. Additionally, Russia has expressed readiness to supply Vietnam with oil and liquefied natural gas, further strengthening energy ties.
Nuclear energy collaboration has been revitalised, with Russia’s Rosatom and Vietnam’s EVN signing agreements to enhance cooperation. Vietnam aims to revive its nuclear energy plans to achieve energy sufficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Defence and security cooperation also play a vital role. A Vietnamese missile frigate’s visit to Russia in 2024 exemplifies ongoing military collaboration. Furthermore, Russia has expressed support for Vietnam’s potential partnership with the BRICS bloc, highlighting shared interests in promoting a multipolar world order.
Cultural and educational exchanges continue to flourish. Russian universities have allocated 1,000 scholarships for Vietnamese students annually, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration. Celebrations marking the 75th anniversary have included cultural performances and exhibitions, reinforcing the enduring friendship between the two nations.
As Russia and Vietnam look to the future, their strengthened partnership serves as a testament to shared values and mutual aspirations, contributing to regional stability and global cooperation.
