At the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a compelling case for increased collaboration between the federal government and the states in order to hasten India’s progress. Addressing chief ministers and lieutenant governors from across the country, PM Modi emphasised that only through true synergy and teamwork could India achieve its ambitious goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the centenary of independence.
PM Modi’s message was clear: “We must accelerate development. “No goal is impossible if the Centre and all the States come together and work together like Team India,” he said, restating his vision of “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) as the shared dream of all 140 crore people. The meeting’s theme, ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat@2047’, underscored the importance of each state’s progress as essential to the nation’s overall development.
The Prime Minister asked states to create vision documents that are ambitious, inclusive, and long-term, reflecting local realities and aligning with national priorities while establishing deadlines for advancement. He also called on states to develop at least one world-class tourist destination, highlighting tourism as a key driver for economic growth and urban development.Given India’s fast urbanisation, PM Modi emphasised the need for “future-ready cities” driven by sustainability and innovation.
The meeting was attended by several chief ministers, including those from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, while some southern leaders, such as those from Karnataka and Kerala, were notably absent. The session also saw calls from state leaders for greater fiscal devolution and collaboration on issues like GDP growth, population management, and leveraging artificial intelligence for development.
Modi’s remarks come at a time when political differences between the Centre and various states have often led to friction.”When every state is Viksit, then Bharat will be Viksit,” he said, framing the development agenda as a cohesive, nonpartisan endeavour. He also highlighted the importance of women’s inclusion in the workforce, advocating for supportive laws and policies.
All state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and important Union ministers make up the NITI Aayog Governing Council, which is the highest authority for promoting cooperative federalism and determining India’s long-term development path
Aiming to make India a developed country within the next 20 years, Modi’s call for center-state synergy signals a renewed push for unity and accelerated progress with the 2047 target in mind.
