A partnership between the global girl group, KATSEYE and Mattel’s Monster High franchise was announced on July 18. This collaboration featured a remix of the Fright Song; originally released in 2010, it is the Monster High brand’s #1 track. Along with six custom Monster High dolls modelled after the group’s members’ signature styles, and showcasing a unique monster alter ego for each. Though these dolls are not for sale, they still serve as a tribute to the creative work put into the collaboration.

Monster High has always been about embracing differences, bold creativity, fearless self-expression and uplifting others. This collaboration definitely doesn’t shy away from doing just that, with the diversity among the members of the group who aren’t afraid to be themselves.

The members spoke of how growing up, they felt unrepresented in media, entertainment and music. They also acknowledged that the young women growing up are so important and can have a deep influence, and so they want to take being that representation seriously. The members who grew up as fans of the brand were super thrilled about the collaboration, with them sharing childhood memories of playing with the Monster High dolls. Sophia even shared some very cute pictures of her as a little girl unboxing the Monster High dolls on Instagram.

This collaboration helps the group continue their mission of creating a world where everyone is proud to be their authentic self, aligning with the brand’s goal of using your voice to remind everyone they belong.

The group also came out with a music video for their remix of the fight song. The members spent nearly 3 hours transforming into spooky fabulous characters with special effects makeup, hair extensions, fake scales, body paint and fang moulds. Each of the dolls and the members’ look in the music video are inspired by their individual heritage and cultures.

Sophia is a legendary Filipino Manananggal, which grants her the ability to shift between forms and vanish into the night sky. Much like the Western mythical Vampires. Her weapon is her hypnotic voice, which lures, soothes and stirs hearts. Her true power awakens with the moon rising.

Lara is a Rakshasa, from a diverse group of powerful supernatural beings who are known for having magical powers and shapeshifting abilities. Their origins lie in South Asian Mythology.

Daniela is a Werewolf who uses her lunar energy through her dancing to influence and lead people. The werewolf’s power reaches its full potential during a full moon.

Yoonchae is a Korean White Tiger spirit, Jangsanbeom. These magnificent creatures are known for their ability to mimic human voices, especially that of loved ones. They reside in the Jangsan mountain area in Busan.

Megan is a Húli Jīng, a mystical Chinese fox spirit known for their cleverness, charisma and illusionary magic. She also has telekinesis powers. These creatures also possess shapeshifting abilities and often take on the form of a beautiful woman.

Manon is a Sea Monster, a descendant of the legendary mystical water spirit, Mami Wata from African lore. She can summon and command water serpents. Mami Wata was often depicted as a mermaid; we can see this incorporated into Manon’s styling for the music video.
