In a step towards indigenisation, the Indian Navy has introduced a new addition to its fleet. Nistar is the first homegrown Diving Support Vessel (DSV) that is designed and constructed in India by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). Nistar was delivered by HSL to the Indian Navy on July 8th 2025, in their facility in Vishakapatnam.
The addition of Nistar is a significant achievement for India’s defence sector. Aligning closely with Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, Nistar is designed and built as per the standards of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The vessel has advanced underwater rescue and diving capabilities, making it one of a kind.
The name Nistar, which has Sanskrit roots, means liberation, rescue or salvation, and reflects the vessel’s fundamental duty. The homegrown vessel weighs about 10,000 tons and measures 118 meters in length, with futuristic diving and sub-sea operation systems.
The vessel has the capability to conduct Deep Sea Saturation Diving missions which can go up to 300 meters (984.252 feet) and also has the ability for repair underwater, rescue operations and salvaging. Nistar also has a Side Diving Stage for operations almost up to 75 meters (246.063 feet) and has enhanced flexibility in changing operational environments.
Designed as a multi-role support ship, Nistar will also act as a ‘Mother Ship’ for the Indian Navy’s Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) — essential for saving lives during submarine emergencies. Nistar is prepared with several Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) that are capable of monitoring divers and performing salvage operations up to 1000 meters (3280.84 feet) below the sea level.
With almost 75% indigenous content, Nistar not only strengthens the Navy’s underwater operational power but also showcases the capabilities of India’s defence shipbuilding ecosystem.
Nistar, along with the recently received ERASR, has furthered the Indian Navy’s commitment to indigenisation, reducing the dependency on foreign suppliers.
