World Environment Day, 2025

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to acknowledge the value of nature and to preserve it today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. Each year has its own defined significant theme that edifies people about nature’s elevation, environmental stewardship and environmental friendliness. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) pioneered the project as a great contribution to nature. ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ is the adopted theme for World Environment Day 2025, emceed by the Republic of Korea.

Beat Plastic Pollution Before It Beats Us

Dealing with plastic has been a cause for decades. Plastic is harming our natural environment, wildlife, and biological cycle, causing significant long-term damage to us. Conserving the ecosystem from this cause is a purpose not just for 2025, but lifetime. On the authority of UNEP, 2 million tonnes in 1950 to cross 430 million tonnes by the time being, fabricating plastic production having shot up. Keeping an eye on it, the 2025 theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, a crusade that urges people to contribute to the environment by reducing plastic and instead utilising eco-friendly alternatives.

The Republic of Korea is Hosting the 2025 Theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’

The Republic of Korea, being the global host country for the 2025 theme, is conducting events to spread information regarding the environment worldwide. Korea will be shedding light on the depletion of plastic, encouraging measures for safeguarding the environment, and opting for tech-driven solutions.

World Environment Day is an indication to create objectives, to achieve new purposes and to remark challenges and hurdles occurring in sustaining the ecosystem.

Korea has implemented bans on plastic, reduced its production and formulated strategies aiming to beat it by 2040. The Republic of Korea draw an example through its actions to fight against plastic.

Jeju Province
Jeju province has been selected as the host location for World Environment Day 2025. Back in 2022, the province unveiled the mission to be plastic-free by 2040. The sole province of the country, Jeju, is responsible for the reclamation facility for household waste at the designated waste processing depot.

Jeju has registered itself as the first province to launch a disposable cup deposit system in the Republic of Korea.

Zero Waste Living Lab
Retailers such as Zero Waste Living Lab in Jeju espouse circular economy principles.

Plastic Straws Banned
Korea has taken the initiative of banning plastic straws.

Extended Producer Responsibility
South Korea has owned a Producer Recycling (PR) system, also named Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which is charged with the product life cycle management and recycling.

Eco-Label Certification
Biomass content is being enlarged by the government needed for eco-label certification for biodegradable plastics.

Let humanity and nature flow together

Why is it Prime to Dedicate a Day to the Environment?

World Environment Day is an indication to create objectives, to achieve new purposes and to remark challenges and hurdles occurring in sustaining the ecosystem.

Above 19 to 23 million tonnes of plastic are plunging into the ocean, adversely harming aquatic beings and rapidly undermining lives under the water. We need to understand together that the life we are living with all the establishments and installations ultimately emanate naturally, and the least we can do is to proceed with tentative steps to protect God’s biggest blessing, nature.

Let’s prove we can co-exist with wildlife and nature peacefully. God has blessed us to be humans, so let’s be decent humans first. If there is humanity, there is nature, and if there is nature, then we are there. Don’t be selfish, think and sustain it for young minds to come. The environment is the supreme favour in terms of resources, peace, and beauty.
