P.V. Anvar, Trinamool Congress convener’s nomination filed as Trinamool Congress’s candidate was rejected by the Election Commission, while his nomination as an independent candidate was approved.

P.V. Anvar, who jumped the boat to Left Democratic Front (LDF) from being an independent candidate in the year 2016, had previously won legislation election in Nilambur in 2021, resigned to create his own party.

Democratic Movement of Kerala, P.V. Anvar’s political party, later joined with Trinamool Congress in 2024. Later on, he created a new alliance with Aam Aadmi Party with Democratic Movement of Kerala as its leader and named it Janakeeya Prathipaksha Prathirodha Munnanani (JPPM).

The by-election happening in Nilambur was due to the resignation of P.V. Anvar. The election is all set to happen on June 19th.

The other candidates contesting in the election are – Aryadan Shoukath from United Democratic Front (UDF), M Swaraj from Left Democratic Front (LDF), Mohan George from BJP and Adv. Sadik Nathuthodi from SDPI.

Aryadan, who was previously the Panchayath President of Nilambur, was defeated by P.V. Anvar in 2016 Legislative Assembly elections in Nilambur. He is also the son of late Aryadan Mohammad from Congress, who was an MLA for nearly eight terms, till 2016.

Swaraj is a native of Nilambur and a former state secretary of Student Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), youth wings of Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Mohan George was previously part of Congress, later on joined BJP and Adv. Sadik Nathuthondi, who had lost elections in Nilambur to P.V. Anvar has decided to contest again.

Nilambur, who has predominantly voted for Congress’s Shoukath Mohammad from 1977 to 2016, and since then, Nilambur has been an important constituency for Communist Party, while Congress is trying their best to win it back.
